Cleaning Your Board

Cleaning Your Board

  • Don't submerge wooden boards in water.  The wood will expand and warp and may develop mildew.
  • Dry wooden boards immediately after washing to prevent warping and mold.
  • DO NOT put wooden boards in the dishwasher.
  • If used for carving meat, don't allow juices to stand for a long period.
  • If your board develops a smell, there are several solutions.

1.  The lemon scrub - cut a lemon in half and put it side-by side - upside down on the board.  Add            elbow grease and scrub until odor is gone.   Rinse           with warm water and pat dry.                                                                                                                                                                                              2.  If you have a stronger odor, sprinkle the board with salt before scrubbing with lemons.

3.  Salt can also be used to address a board that become excessively moist.  Let the salt stand  overnight.

4.  White vinegar is excellent to clean your board.  Use it with baking soda  to get rid of onion and garlic odors.   Although some may feel the vinegar should be diluted, it is safe to use full strength.  Sprinkle the board with the baking soda and then spritz with vinegar.  Don't panic - the foaming action is what you want.  Rinse after 5 minutes and dry.

Oiling Your Board

Cleaning Your Board

  • New boards  are seasoned with  3 coats of Howard's Butcher Block Oil.  Boards thicker than 1  1/2" thickness are treated with additional coats.   2 to 3 coats of Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner are then added.
  • Over time, boards will start to show signs of drying out.  Knife marks will also be more visible.  When this happens, wash the board thoroughly and treat with 2 to 3 coats of Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner.  Wipe on liberally, wait 20 minutes and wipe off the excess.  Rubbing/buffing with a soft cloth will restore the finish.

I strongly recommend Howard's Butcher Block Oil and Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner.  I have tried other products and found that Howard's products are easier to use and dry faster.  Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner will provide excellent protection for a longer period of time before the need to retreat your board.

  • The conditioner contains food grade mineral oil and natural waxes.
  • These products are specifically designed for butcher blocks, cutting boards, wooden bowls and utensils.
  • The food grade mineral oil penetrates the wood.  Beeswax and carnauba wax rejuvenates the wood and prevents cracking.
  • These products exceed US FDA regulations for direct and indirect contact with food.
