Trinity Wooden Crosses
These beautiful crosses were originally designed by Shane Dennehey. They measure 20"tall x 12"wide. Three different wood species are utilized for each cross. Samples are just a representation. This cross was made of hard maple, bloodwood and mahogany. Wood selection may vary but as Christ shed his blood for the remission of our sins, I include bloodwood in all crosses. The Cutting Board Conundrum - End Grain vs Edge Grain
Cutting boards fall into two categories. There are edge grain (long strips of wood fused together with grain running horizontally) and end grain (where the grain runs vertically.) What's the difference?
Edge Grain - The cutting surface is made from parallel pieces of wood glued side by side. This is the most common pattern to most people. Woods are discussed further in greater detail but the most common are walnut, hard maple and cherry. Made from hard woods, edge grain boards are known to be durable, easy to maintain and more affordable. The drawback is that they are harder on knives and are more susceptible to nicks and cuts.
Using dry spaghetti to illustrate, knife marks will show when a knife is drawn across the spaghetti perpendicularly. These cut marks are permanent. Edge grain boards will show the knife marks and require more frequent maintenance. Knives will also loose their edge quicker when cutting on edge grain boards - as opposed to end grain boards.
End Grain - These boards resemble the end of a 2 x 4. The grain is running vertically. In the example of the spaghetti, a knife leaves no mark when it is cutting in the same direction as the spaghetti strands.
An end grain board is both attractive and easy on the knives. The wood fibers will part for a knife's edge but will actually close (fully or partially) when the knife is removed. This results in knives keeping their edge longer, as well as maintaining the boards beauty. Properly maintained with periodic treatments of beeswax (I recommend Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner), these boards will last for years.
